Landing Page Optimization & Basic SEO

This week in class we did some optimization of our websites and landing pages, as well as beginning learning the basics of search engine optimization.

First, we considered changes we could make to landing pages with the goal to increase conversion of our website viewers.  For my website, I decided to work on adding a newsletter sign-up form.  Once I set this up, any of my website visitors who are brought in from the ads, who are interested, have the option to sign up for an email newsletter.  This would notify them whenever I have a new recipe or blog post published.  This would help continue bringing in website viewers.  We also considered if our viewers will be able to easily find what they are looking for on our site, specifically if they can find what is promised in the google ad.  For my website, I think I did a good job of this, since each of my three google ads brings them directly to a specific recipe page that is being advertised.

Second, we began learning the basics of search engine optimization.  We learned various things you can do to improve your SEO.  Some ways to do this are the page title, the headline, body text, the URL, and images/image alt. text.  Using image alt attributes is an interesting thing that I had never considered, but definitely think is important after doing the reading.  The article we read said, “Having images on a keyword-targeted page is wise for many, many reasons, not least among them is that these can help directly and indirectly with rankings.  Most directly, your image has an opportunity to show up in an image search result.”
